I remember seeing the first Mission: Impossible movie when I was like 8 years old and instantly loving it. Then the second one came out and I assumed, like with most movies, that all the future sequels would just continue to be trash. However I think most people would agree that, starting with the Mission: Impossible III, the franchise seems to keep raising the bar. Mission: Impossible – Fallout continues this trend with what I think is the best movie of the franchise.
After Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s incredible performance in M:I III, I was disappointed by the lack of a good villain in Ghost Protocol. Do you remember his name, or can you quote me even one of his lines without looking it up? Exactly. Rogue Nation picked it back up with a great performance from Sean Harris as Solomon Lane and I thought Fallout did a great job as well with the addition of Henry Cavill.
While Fallout isn’t the best written or best acted Mission: Impossible, it was without a doubt the most spectacular in many ways. Scientology may be on to something because Tom Cruise might actually have superpowers IRL. The skydiving scene was absolutely insane, and it became even more insane when I read about how it was filmed. Google it, seriously. After scaling the Burj Khalifa, hanging onto an airplane as it takes off, and the action sequences in Fallout, I really don’t know how they’re going to top themselves. I expect M:I 7 to have Tom Cruise ejected into low earth orbit after the International Space Station explodes and then survive atmospheric reentry by clinging to a metal panel or something. (I better get some royalties when this eventually happens).
Aside from it’s mind blowing set pieces, the movie is simply very well paced and continues to build upon the chemistry that the actors have developed since M:I III. Infinite props to the location scout who absolutely killed it with some of the most beautiful locations and scenes in a Mission: Impossible film. The entire Paris scene, the helicopter chase, the cliffside battle…all of these were just breathtaking. The worst part of this movie is that now I gotta wait another 3 years or more for the next one.
